Module 02 · Diagnostic Map

The Root Cause Tracer.

Every flare on melanated skin starts as a whisper inside the body. Trace the signal from system to surface.

Axis 01

Gut → Skin

Leaky gut barrierWorsened PIH & eczema flares

When the gut's tight junctions loosen, lipopolysaccharides escape into circulation and trigger a body-wide inflammatory cascade. In melanated skin, this expresses as deeper hyperpigmentation and eczema patches that resist topical treatment alone.

Trigger Chain
  1. 1Leaky gut barrier
  2. 2Systemic LPS endotoxemia
  3. 3Pro-inflammatory cytokine flood
  4. 4Melanocyte hyper-stimulation
  5. 5Worsened PIH & eczema flares

Axis 02

Hormones → Skin

Luteal phase shiftCystic, jawline acne

Melanin-rich pores are anatomically denser. When the estrogen-to-androgen ratio tilts in the luteal phase, sebum production overwhelms clearance — producing the painful, deep cystic acne you feel before you see.

Trigger Chain
  1. 1Luteal phase shift
  2. 2Estrogen ↓ / Androgen ↑
  3. 3Sebaceous gland upregulation
  4. 4Pore congestion in deeper skin
  5. 5Cystic, jawline acne

Axis 03

Mind → Skin

Chronic stressAshy, dehydrated, reactive skin

Cortisol cannibalizes the skin's lipid mantle. Even with consistent moisturizer, a stressed melanated barrier loses water from beneath the surface — turning oily skin dehydrated and dry skin ash-grey within days.

Trigger Chain
  1. 1Chronic stress
  2. 2Sustained cortisol release
  3. 3Ceramide & lipid breakdown
  4. 4Transepidermal water loss
  5. 5Ashy, dehydrated, reactive skin

Axis 04

Beard & Shave → Skin

Coarse, curved follicleRazor bumps + post-shave PIH

Melanated beard hair grows in a tight curl. A close, against-the-grain shave severs the hair below the surface; as it grows back it pierces the dermal wall instead of exiting cleanly — producing chronic razor bumps, ingrowns, and the dark spots that linger long after the bump heals.

Trigger Chain
  1. 1Coarse, curved follicle
  2. 2Close shave against the grain
  3. 3Hair re-enters dermis
  4. 4Pseudofolliculitis barbae
  5. 5Razor bumps + post-shave PIH

Beard, Shave & Barrier

Razor bumps (PFB)

Why it happens

Curled hair re-entering the follicle after a close shave — triggering inflammation and PIH on Black skin.

Remedy

Single-blade or electric trim only. Pre-shave with warm calendula oil; post-shave with witch hazel + aloe.

Daily ritual

Shave every 2–3 days, never daily. Always with the grain.

For the whole community

Ingrown hair on neck

Why it happens

Coarse hair + tight collars + dry skin = trapped follicles that scar dark.

Remedy

2x weekly chemical exfoliation with mandelic acid (gentler than glycolic on deep tones).

Daily ritual

Sleep on silk. Hydrate the neck nightly with sea buckthorn oil.

For the whole community

Beard dandruff

Why it happens

Skin under the beard is starved of oxygen and moisture; sebum hardens into flakes.

Remedy

Wash beard with a sulfate-free cleanser 3x weekly. Massage in jojoba oil nightly.

Daily ritual

Comb beard daily to lift skin debris and distribute oils.

For the whole community

Post-shave hyperpigmentation

Why it happens

Each shave is a micro-injury. Melanated skin floods the cut with pigment as protection.

Remedy

Daily tinted SPF on the shave zone. Nightly licorice root + niacinamide serum.

Daily ritual

Pause shaving for 7 days every quarter to let pigment cycle settle.

Body & Scalp

Folliculitis (chest & back)

Why it happens

Sweat + occluded clothing + bacterial overgrowth in deep pores.

Remedy

Shower within 30 min of workouts. Benzoyl peroxide wash 2x weekly.

Daily ritual

Wear loose cotton or moisture-wicking layers. Change pillowcases twice a week.

For the whole community

Keloid-prone shoulders & chest

Why it happens

Amplified fibroblast activity in melanin-rich skin overshoots wound repair.

Remedy

Silicone sheets on fresh wounds. Avoid unnecessary piercings/cosmetic cuts on torso.

Daily ritual

Gotu kola tincture nightly supports balanced collagen turnover.

For the whole community

Ashy shins & elbows

Why it happens

Low sebum + low humidity + hot water = accelerated TEWL.

Remedy

Lukewarm showers under 8 min. Pat dry, then lock in with shea + sea buckthorn balm.

Daily ritual

Slugging dry zones overnight 2x weekly with petroleum-free occlusive.

For the whole community

Dark scalp & nape pigmentation

Why it happens

Tight braids, dry scalp, sun exposure on the part-line.

Remedy

Loosen tension at the hairline. Scalp serum with niacinamide weekly.

Daily ritual

Tinted mineral SPF along the part-line on sunny days. Always.
